I like The Simpsons better. Family Guy is fine, but they do too much of that random annoying stuff. Like scenes of Peter fighting a chicken that has no context to what was going on but the scene lasts for like 2 or 3 minutes. Whereas The Simpsons has humour that is quite smart if you look into it. I went to one of by boyfriend's university classes & the professor played two episodes of The Simpsons & then had the class discuss the religious references. It was really interesting.
My reason why? It's cuz family guy has too much stupid things that just randomly pop in the show like For example if they're talking about cuts and bruises someone in Family Guy can just randomly say 'Oh yea like remember that time you battled against Mr.T?' It is so stupid and has nothing to do with the actual show... It's just an excuse to make the show longer.... Simpsons is just hilarious and it fits in with the storyline...
I found this little article on the internet. This is pretty much the truth about the two.
Quote:
Someone watching "Family Guy" for the first time might mistake it for a cheap knockoff of another animated series.
That show, "The Simpsons," also airs Sunday evenings on FOX, and also follows an absurdly dysfunctional yet relatable family, with a father who's rude, insensitive, clueless and dumb; a mother who's in control but painfully alone in her groundedness; and a daughter who's smarter than anyone else. Both series have bars where their main characters hang out after working at their menial jobs, and both are known for their pop-culture references.
There are some major differences in the two shows: "Family Guy" features brighter, rounder line drawings; a nearly human talking dog who's fond of martinis; and a matricidal, violent, scheming baby with a British accent and ambiguous sexuality.
I think that stuff is pointing out the obvious about the two shows.
In my opinion, The Simpsons is a smarter show than Family Guy -- which for me, makes it more enjoyable. I found this on Wikipedia regarding the humour in The Simpsons:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Simpsons wrote:
The show's humor turns on cultural references that cover a wide spectrum of society so that viewers from all generations can enjoy the show. Such references, for example, come from movies, television, music, literature, science, and history. Whenever possible, the animators also put jokes or sight gags into the show's background via humorous or incongruous bits of text in signs, newspapers, and elsewhere. The audience may often not notice the visual jokes in a single viewing. Some are so fleeting that they become apparent only by pausing a video recording of the show. Kristin Thompson argues that The Simpsons uses a "...flurry of cultural references, intentionally inconsistent characterization, and considerable self-reflexivity about television conventions and the status of the programme as a television show."
I find that the humour in Family Guy is a lot of stupid jokes, randomness & repetition. I hate how some of the humour doesn't even tie in with what was going on in the show (the example I used before, Peter fighting a giant chicken for 2-3 minutes). I don't see anything funny about it & it gets to the point where it annoys me. I watch Family Guy occasionally, but I find myself changing the channel when they do stupid stuff like that to fill in time.
