I just want to know what it's like... She suggested it because i've suffered from depression for a long time now and nothing seems to be working for me...
I've been to a mental hospital. It's really a joke, I wake up and I'm supposed to do "schoolwork" which is a collection of crossword puzzles and stuff well below my gradelevel. Then we do various other stuff, then we eat lunch (without caffeinated drinks....grrrr I wanted tea!) then a little while after we went outside and played basketball and ate snacks. Later on in the nights we'd eat dinner and watch movies. Not to mention visitation hours which at least the first night I threatened to hit my dad for getting me into the whole mess to begin with.
I personally found the experience to be alright but it didn't help me any because when it was time for me to be evaluated by the psych dude he concluded that I was fine. After all I do have a plan to deal with my anger and yada yada. In the end I spent 2 days there (you are supposed to spend 3+ but they let me out early ) gained absolutely nothing from the experience but the ability to brag about the weirdest place I've masturbated being a shower in a mental hospital. They also inconvenienced me by not allowing me to wear shoes aside from my flip flops cause I'd try to hang myself with my shoelaces, and it was waaaaaay too cold for my feet in there.
My advice is if your friend tells you to go to one, tell them to kiss your ass. I don't know which is more depressing: being depressed or being in a place where you can't do anything without someone else's schedule saying you can. I mean fine if you personally feel like drugs or therapy will make you feel better but your stupid friend shouldn't just be like "you're unhappy go lock yourself up in a mental ward". It's not their place.
Also my girlfriend got lice from being in the same mental hospital and they flat out FORGOT TO FEED HER! I mean honestly, if you are going to control somebody's diet at least remember to give them a meal!

I'm sorry to hear your experience was that bad, ct. I only have the perspective of a volunteer who comes in once a week, so I don't know that much about the daily routine of a patient. But, where I volunteer the patients don't have to join in on the group activities & they can go out when they please (most of the patients, anyway, the ones who have memory problems could get lost so they need to be escorted when they go outside). It isn't the most cheerful environment though, as would be expected.
lol I'm under 18, you can't do crap anywhere wherever you please.
Though yes I have a bad experience pretty much anywhere where I'm "caged" per say. I'm an adrenaline junkie and they want me to sit down and rot my brain out watching TV when I could be spinning bike tires or shooting people's brains out at a rate of 2 brains every six seconds? Give me a break, especially with that video on drugs! Two of the guys that were with me admitted to me that they smoke weed and the other one was like 8 years old. I.....I refuse to take any mind altering substance because I prefer my current state of mind which has been responsible for thousands of deaths in a plethora of video games, not to mention often strikes bike pedals against the road because of how far I can lean into a turn. So yeah that video was POINTLESS!

I see a psychiatrist every 1-2 months. It isn't in a hospital though. It can be kind of frustrating to find the right thing that will work for whatever problem you're going through, and it seems like the only thing psychiatrists are good at are prescribing prescription drugs and giving you referrals. They really should be more in depth in their treatment plans rather than focusing on a single area in my opinion.

Here's what to expect:
The first time you go for a diagnosis you should expect to be talking to the psychiatrist for at least 2 hours. He/She will need to be very indepth to exclude other mental illnesses that may be causing your depression.
When it is over he/she will tell you his/her official thoughts. They might prescribe an anti-depressant on the spot if they feel it is necessary. They might refer you to a psychologist. Or they might set up a follow-up appointment.
My personal opinion for depression is to follow a multiple-treatment approach.
1. Medication & Nutritional supplements to help correct any serious imbalances
2. Talk to a psychologist
3. Exercise, take a daily walk in the sun/fresh air, and make a healthy lifestyle change
Good luck.

No, I haven't. I think it would be a fascinating place to volunteer at though. I am not particularly interested in psychiatry but am interested in psychology. I'm fascinated with human behaviour and strive to know why people do what they do.
I think you should consider it. However, make sure you feel comfortable doing something like this. Don't do anything that you don't feel comfortable doing.
