Why you gettin on CT's case? He's got 10 MPH faster and going the same speed as the rest of the traffic (so he says). And if a kid's standing on a road/lunging infront of cars that are moving fast then he's an idiot. personally I go bout 20 KMH over the speed limit permanently, I've been driving for a year and have never had an accident/ticket/close call or anything.
But yeah, I guess you won't say anything to Sarah who's driving DRUNK though.
exactly...my street is half full of kids and half full of parents of college aged kids. On the side with the college aged kids I go 30mph and on the side with houses full of elementary school kids I never go more than 20-25.
There is no speed limit posted on my street, I assume its 25 or 30 but it really doesn't matter cause its short and nobody in their right mind would do 45 or whatever on it.

I cannot believe Im sorry to say but the stupidity in this thread, first of all drinking and driving is NEVER ok. If you want to chance killing/injuring yourself/your vehicle go for it but how dare you chance taking another persons life in your hands. Over the weekend a co-worker of my fiances managed to wrap his vehicle around a pole he is now in a medically induced coma in which he could die. Has a shattered leg/arm/hip and is seriously screwed up. He will not now nor ever get sympathy for me for the simple fact he was drunk. I have no respect for that. Thankfully no-one else was hurt but his life will never be the same again. I think Sarah is a good person from what Ive seen but must be honest in saying my respect for you has gone down after reading this and you seemingly thinking its a joke :/ That is just disturbing on so many levels.
Next speed limits are set for a reason I dont give a rats ass how well you think you know your vehicle, there are so many other things goin on around you that you cannot guarentee what will happen. Do you really want to chance someone else getting killed because you know your vehicle so well? Tell that to the parents of the little kid you hurt/kill. Tell that to your gf when you get into an accidient and one of her kids gets hurt. Which is more important driving like a wanna be racecar driver or getting to your destination safely?
You may have had no close calls YET but there is no saying it wont happen in the future. The saddest thing is most always believe it wont happen to them until it does. -This is in reference to the following comment "I've been driving for a year and have never had an accident/ticket/close call or anything. "-
Consider your vehicle a dangerous weapon and act accordingly.
Edited for clarification

What do you mean I've had no close calls? I said I had been on 3 lane 1 way streets TWICE when a driver pulled into my lane I've almost been run over on my bike THREE times TWO of which I averted myself by braking hard with a forward bias and a slight turn of the handle bars (the other time the lady didn't seem to care that there was a crosswalk in front of the stop sign). I said someone ran a red light in front of me and by in front of me I meant PERPENDICULAR to my front bumper.
As far as your opinions on safety I laugh at them because some of you people tout your safety horns while your vehicles themselves are less safe to either yourself or whoever you hit.
The average person has a 190millisecond response time to visual stimulus, I'm currently scoring about 200ms and I'm lacking in the sleep department for sure. Your average granny, isn't going to be that fast even if she's had a full night's sleep. Now add in the fact that granny is driving a 4000+lb SUV or Minivan and you have a car thats going to stop very slowly and have alot of force behind it. I will say it a million times, my light ass 3100lb car is infinitely safer than 60% or more of the cars out there just because it is fairly light. If I run someone over they are going to likely be crushed by about 750lbs or less from the wheel they are under. If my mom runs you over you've got 1000lbs on top of you. thats 33% worse. Now of course there's also the I'll call it "hammer effect" you see if you hit a nail with an itty bitty clawhammer you'll get it in the wall in a couple swings, now you get a sledgehammer and BAM one hit is through the wall, why? Inertia, that sledge is going to hit harder cause it weighs more, similarly my mom's big old SUV is less forgiving than my mid sized sedan.
If you really want to be safe, buy an old honda civic, spend thousands of dollars putting a big brake kit on it and the widest grippiest tires you can fit under the wheelwells and get some parachutes mounted on the back. While you are at it mount PILLOWS on the front of the car so that if you hit somebody they just hit your pillows.
I can bet my ass and a can of sardines that you do NOT have all of the above canadiansmurf, you are an unsafe driver in the eyes of anyone who has. So are you REALLY a safe driver? Do you really do everything you can to make sure you are completely safe?
Oh and it gets better! If you want to be really safe you need to make sure your car is LOUD so people can hear it a mile away. This can either be done through getting a less restrictive muffler or by buying the loudest stereo money can buy and then playing it so loud you need earplugs to drive. Then you also need to make sure your car is easily visible by painting it a fluorescent orange or yellow!
That's not all either, you need to reduce weight by getting racing seats, a carbon fiber hood, carbon fiber trunk, remove the air conditioner, and etc.
Safety is all relative, you are not the safest driver on the road till you've wasted a bunch of time and money and made a car worthy of all the little rice boys.

Before you get your panties in a twist the speed comments were not only directed at you as for the close calls that was in reference to this "I've been driving for a year and have never had an accident/ticket/close call or anything. " which was made by Will. Take your head out of your ass and stop trying to defend your driving skills and realize that irregardless of your vehicle you have to expect the unexpected. No-one is 100% safe on the road so don't even try that game with me but there is a big difference when your driving proactively rather than arrogantly thinking that because you know your vehicle so well you will ALWAYS be prepared. Why are you so bloody defensive anyway? I haven't seen anyone state yet that you are a poor driver and yet you are reacting as if someone has.

Now as for that in particular I think you are completely missing the point of what I said and beyond that it isnt even worth commenting on.

I am the average drver here in florida, I get passed doing 60 in a 40 zone, I get passed doing 35 in a 30 zone, and yes I do speed with my girlfriend's son in the back seat.
As far as it being the autobahn if you aren't going over by more than 50% you are pretty much the average driver - young or old! I've been passed by 60 year old men driving buicks and stuff. Lets not even talk about young men (18-28 years) driving black Mustang GTs. I knew a girl who drove regularly at 20 over ANYWHERE.
You know, most people assume that if they are in the right lane and the light is green they can turn without looking at the crosswalk for people and I ALWAYS check.
Nobody who has driven with me has ever called me a bad driver. My dad comes close...he has a Class B CDL. He avoids traffic at all cost....like the roads where the road is wider than the lane? He rides outside the lanes as much as he can. He also has a theory that my engine should never go over 3000rpm because it makes a "jackrabbit start". You know what though? He never obeys the speed limits, even on roads that are 30mph (and much more likely to have kids playing in the street).
My grandfather once came home on the interstate with my grandmother, mom, and my brothers doing 70mph just because he thought he'd be late for a football game on ESPN. Needless to say EVERYONE in the car was scared they were going to die. From what I've heard nobody ever questions how careful of driver I am.
Also, just because people set speed limits doesn't mean the number really matters, would you go 135 on a residential street if the department of motor vehicles put up a sign that said you could? Would you jump off a bridge? There are some roads in Florida that I think should be slowed down but the majority of them need a bump up by 10-15mph. 26th street for example - half of it is 40mph, half is 30 and everybody goes 40 the whole way (my family included). It's far from a residential street - except for on the 30 end - but until about midnight there are cars bumper to bumper speeding and anyone who would be stupid enough to cross it without extreme caution probably hasn't ever seen it.
I don't think anyone should go over about 60 mph for any reason except for fun because past like 50mph wind resistance goes up like mad and really kills your fuel economy. A car's engine is more efficient horsepower wise at the top of its powerband regardless of what people tell you, its not the engine that really kills your fuel economy it's wind resistance.
Granted there are some folks that have done some things to tweak their cars aerodynamics so excessively that speed doesn't matter that much (I saw a civic online that got 70mpg or some shit)
The people in my class at the technical school pretty much can all brag that they have gone 100mph or more while my worst was 85mph on a road in the middle of no where at the middle of night (where marie has gone 90 in her ex's dad's truck) the limit there is 50 but its hard to find a soul going under 70. I do 50 there over 50% of the time.
I read a story once about some road that was engineered a million years ago for people to go 85mph and these days the limit is like 65 even though cars now handle waaaaaaaay better than they did back then.
Also since you mentioned the autobahn did you know that the german autobahn averages just as many accidents on the speed unlimited sections as it does the limited ones? Or something like that.
I know of 2-3 street corners in my area where people have collisions all the time and 2-3 more that I'm surprised I've never seen an accident at since it seems like people don't wait their turns at the stop signs. The funny thing is all of those roads aren't popular places to speed. One accident I watched with my own eyes was caused by a chick running a redlight cause her son was in the back seat crying. If you are driving keep your eyes on the ROAD! Better little Timmy cry than little Timmy die.
You should seriously come down to Kentucky. People will run red lights, going near double the speed limit. It's incredibly ridiculous.
Ouch, sorry to hear about that. I always make sure I keep my wits about me when drink-driving. I also always make sure I have ample room to stop should I have to in the wet. If I can only see a short distance in front of me, I will slow down.
I'm a fast, aggressive driver, but everyone who goes in a car with me always feels safe and says I'm a good driver. I've never hit anything, but some stupid woman hit me when I was stopped at a stop sign in my work car. It was her fault so she payed for all the repairs but I still felt bad driving around with that dent for almost a month.
