Definitely a laptop, as it is portable and can be used for gaming as well, so you get the best of both worlds. Plus, desktops produce too much heat and require a lot of power. Yes, I am cheap that is why I love laptops so much more .
If you want performance then get a desktop* because it's easy to clean and you are able to upgrade your drivers, newer desktops now come with x86 64-bit now!!! :3
If your looking for portability than laptops are for you, which is what i am using now but i got an alienware as a goodie for Christmas. Your laptop will accumulate dust and slow down your fan causing over heats which will also slow down your cpu and processor because your fan is trying to overclock by hogging all the battery power thus making your computer slow, hot, and less portable because of the low battery life.
Note; your computer will overclock if your computer has "smartfan", if you don't have it and your computer over heats your processor will melt
