Post subject: Tobacco Industry

Over 12 BILLION dollars are still being used to advertise tobacco every year - cigarette modeling, television, movies, I mean everywhere you look people WANT to do it as it looks so 'cool' - it's twice as attractive than ever.

Do you feel action needs to be taken against the tobacco companies to stop the advertising to young children?

According to statistics 90% of people who begin smoking are under 18, so that tells you something - doesn't it? - they are attracting children and then they end up being addicted for the rest of their life, and well the death toll - let's not even go there.

It makes me mad when I go watch some movies and the camera is looking at every move the cigarette takes from the time it enters the persons mouth to the time the guy throws it on the ground and walks away with his portrayed 'cool' friends... You just see it over and over again. Millions going into all the advertising every single day.

Money, money money - there isn't even anything positive compared to the negatives yet it's still potrayed as such an amazing act...

All the tobacconists care about is money. Money money money money money. To the point where I see 12 year olds walking about with cigarettes in their mouths and all these other kids hanging with them because they're "cool". I had a friend who used to smoke cigarllos for a while... mad girl

But didn't they come out with flavoured cigarettes or something? O.o

I think they should stop advertisin to young children. I think smoking's a personal choice and shouldn't be somewhat forced through subliminal messages & them making you think it's the 'cool'. It would be nice if they limited the advertising to higher rated movies like 18 and +. It would be nice to see the population of people under the age of 18 going down. Course adults would still get hooked, but I think that's better than a child who's still physically developing.

Smokers are rapidly becoming the minority and non smokers the majority. I know they want to make the city in which I live smoke free by 2010. As it sits now you cannot smoke in public establishments or within a certain distance of there entrances. It is rumoured though as I mentioned before that by 2010 they want to have it so its illegal to smoke anywhere in public (walking down the street etc..) If people are serious about this and the government is serious about it...Why not just make the sale of tobacco illegal? It would decrease the chance of children being influenced. Chances there would be people to still smoke illegally but maybe the numbers would decrease? If the government didn't want the money they recieve from taxes do you think it would be illegal already?

I think they wouldn't do that because it would affect the smoker's freedom of choice. They say that they're gonna bans moking in all public places, but you can still smoke in your own house. It'd just make everywhere where non-smokers need fresh air nice and smoke-free

So they still want smokers to have choices...but really what choices are they being given when they are told they cannot smoke in bars, bingo halls, casinos most of which places previously had smoking and non smoking sections and you have to be legal age to get into (18 here). People made the choice to work in those enviroments and non smoking people made the choice to visit those enviroments.

to be honest with you, im amazed, 12 million, im going into advertising/marketing next year, i would love to work for a cigarette company, so much money id be making, i know, it sounds horrible, but think about it, if you dont do it, someone else will, and they cant be stopped, one cigarette costs about 10 cents or less, and a pack of 12 or w/e costs like 7 or 8 dollars, these companies cant be stopped, maybe we just have to accept and and learn to make the right decision ourselves

There are positives too, it seems like all of them are being forgotten. First of all there are so many jobs in the tobacco industry. There is the farmer, his farm hands, people that make it, people that sell it and many others. There are lots of people that come up from smaller 3rd world countries to pick tobacco to make some money for their family so lets just take that away from them. Also, there is specific equipment that the farmers bought to harvest a process their tabacco (which isn't cheap).

Yes they are a corporation, so leave them alone it isn't their fault that people smoke they just make it. You don't see commercials on TV 250,000 Americans die every year from heart attacks, so don't eat McDonalds it is retarded - www.retarded.com

How can you think that? Money makes the world go round. The easiest way to make money would be a JOB. Look at the odds. 1 / However many die of smoking. People are dieing all of the time because of starvation, why are they starving they no money! That is it. So to rephrase your statement "Non smokers are more important then poor people."
