Post subject: Safe Sex

Note: This post isn't finished & I will be adding more when I have the time. [Smile]

In this post I’m going to attempt to cover many of the questions that plenty of young people have about sex and sex-related issues. If there is anything I’ve missed, please let me know I will have no problem adding it.

How do I know if I’m ready to have sex?

First of all, there is no “right” or “wrong” age to have sex. Everyone is ready at different times. However, there are some key things you should keep in mind before you do the deed.

You’re not ready if:

• You feel pressured to have sex. If you feel like you have to have sex or there will be consequences, it isn’t a good idea.
• You need to be drunk and/or high to do it.
• The media /your peers/etc. have influenced your choice to have sex because it’s “the cool thing to do”. You’ll feel pretty uncool when you regret what you did.
• You think you will feel ashamed afterwards.
• You are doing it to impress yourself or someone else.
• You want to “just get it over with”.
• You need someone else’s opinion as to whether or not you should have sex.
• You feel embarrassed buying condoms or other types of birth control.
• You could not handle dealing with getting pregnant or obtaining an STI.

Ask yourself:

• About the consequences of sex. What type of birth control will you use? What would you do if you found out you were pregnant or had an STI? It is also a good idea to discuss these things with your partner before you have sex.
• Do you trust the person you want to have sex with?
• Is this what you really want?

What types of birth control are there? What do they do and how do they work?

I should start this off by saying there is NO birth control that has been invented yet that is 100% effective at preventing pregnancy and STIs. There is ALWAYS a risk of getting pregnant or obtaining an STI when you have sex.

What is an STI?

STI stands for sexually transmitted infection. You may be more familiar with the term “STD”, which stands for sexually transmitted disease. These terms both refer to the same thing. STIs are infections or diseases that can be passed through sexual contact. Depending on the infection/disease, it can be passed in different ways. Through bodily fluids (semen, blood, etc.) is one of the most common ways.
