Computer, of my choosing (I.E. what make, desktop or laptop etc.)

I need help from all you techies.

I tend to use a computer mainly for computer browsing. However, I tend to save a lot of things i.e. music, word documents, applications, pictures - you know, normal.

I don't tend to download videos, however, so that's a plus.

Anyway, what kind of specs would I need?

If you could find me an example computer, it can't be more than £300-£350 (but seeing as it's a personal rather than shared computer I can't see that much being a problem, and it'll be upgraded slowly over time anyway).

And yeah. If you need more information or whatever, I'll tell you.

Oh, and it can't be Dell, just fyi.

build it yourself

get a desktop using 512 to 1024 megabytes of DDR2-800 ram, a cheap dual core processor, a 250 to 500gb hard drive, a pair of logitech X-230 speakers and etc.

I admire people who can buy all the perfect things and put them together to build the ultimate computer.

I think red would prefer to buy something already put together though. As would I.

What kind of things to look for though with so many choices out there?

Something under £500 that is relatively affordable and, perhaps not powerful, but okay on at least most aspects someone would buy a computer for - space, memory, gaming, internet surfing, school work, music etc.

why bother buying something thats already put together? you can end up spending enough money for 1 computer as you would for 3 built by hand and its not all that complicated. It's just like legos.

It takes about an hour or two to put it all together (depending on how much of a hassle you have with the wires for the motherboard, the cpu fan and etc) maybe even less if you get a nice toolless case with a removable motherboard tray and etc. Then you waste 45 minutes of your life installing windows xp. At this point its sooooo much better than a computer out of a single box, because it isn't loaded with crap adware that slows your computer down.

You can get home from work at 5, make and eat supper and put together a fully functional computer in time for a 10 o clock bedtime, so if it saves you say $1000 off a $2000 computer (my first homebuilt computer was worth that) is it really a waste of a few hours? No adware and basically earning back $200-300 an hour?

I taught a guy how to build his first computer over AIM for god's sakes. He said everything went smoothly - this guy was by no means experienced with even taking computers apart and I didn't really give him any pictures or anything to work off of. It's all simple, the motherboard is labelled cryptically and all the important parts have instruction manuals that can be read in a matter of minutes.

My 11 year old brother built his first computer all by himself when he was 10 - he also has very little experience besides watching me on occassion tinkering with my own rigs. He is by no means a child prodigy, he is at risk for failing grades in school and has been diagnosed with a couple learning disabilities.

Besides, who do you think builds your computer? bill gates? or some guy with a mediocre job working on an assembly line? It's not rocket science.

I was always intimidated to go out and build a computer by myself, never doing something like that in my life.

I bet it is easy by the way you described it though...

You need to teach me over AIM too [Razz]
