This is mainly directed at CT, as he's the only one to my knowledge with a good understand of the internal stuff.. so my current computer is kind of messed up, and it's getting old and slow now anyways, so time to get some new shit I'm thinkin. What should I get?
First off, I will say I live in an a fairly isolated area in the country (1000 people) so these random parts you be spoutin' off I might not be able to access (Edmonton is 2 hours, and there's a town of about 20, 000 an hour away though).. Secondly, it can't be very expensive, anything over 1000 is very unlikely, and thirdly.. if it was something I had to build could I hook up a webcam and get you to guide me threw it?
well if its old and getting slower, might need a little software tuning to speed it up....but what you've got will never be as fast as a new rig with the parts I'd pick for you and you paying yourself only a pat on the back for labor
I could guide you through the process with or without a webcam, I've been around computers so long I could build one with my eyes closed practically.
Access to parts I don't know a whole hell of alot about. The first rule of the acquisition of computer parts is don't buy locally. Trust me - no matter where you go everything will be overpriced (walmart down here will charge you $100 for a $35 graphics card). The best solution is to go online and find a reputable store with low prices. I shop almost exclusively at newegg.com but they don't ship to canada from what I can see....I just found the website for NCIX - which is from what I've heard the best place for you guys to get your parts.
Now you should probably try to cut costs where you can. If you have an extra monitor or can reuse the one you are reusing right now and don't feel the need for a higher resolution monitor you can shave about $150 off the final price of a home built computer by using your existing monitor. This goes for mice and keyboards and basically anything else that is outside the case. However I personally do try to point people towards a decent optical mouse and a nice keyboard (still cheap lol) because alot of people have spilled soda on their keyboard or their manufacturer gave them a junky mouse. However their is an old rule: if it isn't broke don't fix it.
$1000 would be alot of spending money for me my current computer only cost me $800 with me reusing a monitor and some other minor stuff. Course we got some difference in currencies but its hardly a number worth counting.
I'm going to get started on a parts list right now

only problem is I'm not getting along with NCIX....its not quite as user friendly
$1000 is a lot for what we are talking about anyways....if I had money growing from my ears I could buy some multi-thousand dollar rigs
but yeah just don't plan on getting crysis and playing it at max resolution...I often brag that my computer will run crysis even though its the most demanding game ever but I know better than to say anything about lots of AA/AS
for anything else, your budget is hardly limiting, unless we need to buy you a monitor in which case we'll have to squeeze in most of the PC

My dad's got a backup monitor I'm going to use probably.. no rush anyways, I wont' be returning home until Saturday
dunno what graphics card to get you yet, dunno what ram (but I do know 1 to 2gb of DDR2-800 will work nicely), dunno what hard drive and you still have to buy a copy of windows
